SCOPE OF WORK

The project Design Intent for the Douglas Park Community Center building is to provide a multipurpose and flexible facility that will serve as a focal arrival point to the park and a gathering place for a variety of communal activities; increasing the indoor and outdoor capabilities of the building through the interactive use of indoor-outdoor spaces with an abundance of natural illumination.

This facility will be the entry and focal point of the park and will be constructed on an environmentally sensitive area (Contaminated) on structural piles, consisting of multi-purpose spaces, administrative offices, snack bar / kitchen, public restrooms, park maintenance storage space, classroom and crafts spaces, offices, multi-purpose outdoor courtyard.

This project was approved by the stakeholder community after (2) public charette working meetings. This facility will be constructed above a contaminated landfill and the entire park and facility will be an example of recycled and sustainable design for the greater good of the user community and neighborhood. The building serves as the official gateway into the park area.

Accordingly, the facility is designed as an iconic gateway with very friendly and playful shapes that serve and function to support and promote social interaction, activities, development spaces, and connectivity to the greater outdoor activity areas of the park.

The building is oriented primarily towards the North and the children’s tot lot and play equipment. The entire facility is designed to function as a tool and mechanism for adult and child interaction both indoor and outdoor and for visual and auditory contact. The adults can view the park activities from the indoor Event Space, or the North Patio area. The park manager has 360-view of the entire facility and 180-degree view of the park itself. The entire facility is designed for flexibility of use in any type of weather and for use for indoor or outdoor planned activity or event. As you exit the North Main Entry into the park area you get 180-degree view of the park in its entirety.

The building is designed in a simple contemporary tropical format of volumes interconnected by open breezeways and a courtyard with partial roofed areas for sun and rain protection. The shapes and forms created are influenced by the historic influences of Tropical architecture, volumetric expression of space and clean contemporary and practical detailing for ease of construction and facility maintenance after intense use. The green-vine covered accent wall facing SW 37th AVE with the parks name emphasizes the commitment to the environment and sustainability.
